Areas of Law / Employment

We spend the majority of our lives at work – so when something goes wrong in the workplace, or you think you have been unfairly treated, you need expert legal advice at the earliest opportunity to ensure that your rights are protected.

Employment law is very fast moving and complicated, and very few people have a clear idea of their rights at work. Our employment lawyers can advise on a wide range of work related matters including;

  • Bullying at work
  • Discrimination
  • Pay Disputes
  • Redundancy
  • Unfair dismissal

Our employment lawyers can also offer advice on the nicer side of employment law, such as helping you negotiate your contract for that dream job.

Employment Questions

I was sacked for gross misconduct. I have taken my case to an employment tribunal, but now my employer has totally changed the reasons why I was sacked and is denigrating my character without any evidence to back it up. What can people do in this situation?

I have 12 years’ service with a major bank. Following maternity leave I’ve been working part-time for the last eight months. If the bank offers voluntary redundancy will I be reckoned to have worked eight months or will my 12 years be taken into account?

I have been employed for the last five years by a small firm with fewer than a dozen employees. Just over 12 months ago I became too ill to work and went on statutory sick pay, followed by Employment and Support Allowance, and all this time I’ve never received any assistance from the company. I have now had heart surgery and intend to return to work when I’m well enough. Do they have to take me back?

My husband is a driver for a coach firm and often works overnight. The firm doesn’t pay any shift allowance for this. Shouldn’t there be extra pay for working overnight? Are there some jobs where night premiums do not apply?

Three years ago the firm I work for moved to larger premises and, with discussion, our working hours were changed. Now we’ve been given a letter saying our working hours will change again, and this will happen from next week. We’ve been asked to sign and return the letter without any further discussion. Are they allowed to do this?

I’ve worked for a firm since leaving school six years ago. They won’t give me a pay slip, and I’ve been treated like dirt since I demanded a P60 last year, telling them I should have one by law. My friends don’t get the minimum wage, and we don’t think our employer is paying tax and national insurance contributions for us.

I work in a timber yard, where part of my job is to drive a stacker truck and a dumper truck. I read an article recently about an accident where the driver was fined. Do I need a licence or any kind of training to drive this type of machinery?

I work as a maintenance supervisor for a large firm. I recently spoke to a colleague doing the same job at a different location, and discovered he’s paid £1.00 an hour more than me, whilst he is paid 20p an hour less than a colleague elsewhere. Can this be classed as discrimination?

I had a serious injury at work five months ago and was told I wouldn’t be fit for work again for up to two years. Now I’m being made redundant after 25 years with the firm. Can they just do that?
