Areas of Law / Employment

My husband is a driver for a coach firm and often works overnight. The firm doesn’t pay any shift allowance for this. Shouldn’t there be extra pay for working overnight? Are there some jobs where night premiums do not apply?

Ideally your husband should be paid extra for working night shifts, but there’s no law that says people working at night should be paid more than those working during the day. It’s entirely a matter for negotiation between employer and employee, or between the employer and the trade union. Your husband’s rate of pay and any shift allowances will be set out in his employment contract.
