General Legal Advice Questions

Seven years ago we bought double glazed windows and doors from a reputable firm, with a ten-year guarantee on materials and five years on labour. The front door changed colour and the firm fitted new panels, but the door has now started to leak. The firm says it is prepared to come back again but will charge us £40 “as per contract.” Surely we shouldn’t be charged since the leak was caused by faulty workmanship?

What does changing your name by deed poll mean? If you do this, is all mention of the birth parents removed from the records?

I go to car boot sales and see a lot of old pictures in nice frames. If I bought a picture and found it was worth a lot of money, would the seller have any claim on it?

We have lived at this address for ten years, and in that time have received countless letters demanding money from people who don’t live here and to my knowledge never have. I’ve written to one particular debt collection agency many times, and even invited them to visit, but the letters keep on coming.

When our boiler stopped working the plumbers discovered that my daughter had accidentally shut off the gas by hanging her coat on the lever. However they’’ve still sent us a bill for £75 even though they discovered the problem within a matter of seconds. Do we have to pay it?

We own a property on a mobile home park. We have been refused permission to replace our dog, which under park rules is “at the absolute discretion of the park owner”, but he bought this site when it already had dogs in residence. I presume he could seek eviction if we broke the rules, but since we own the property how would this work?

My neighbour and I have both been considering buying replacement double-glazed windows and he has suggested that we contract for the two houses in order to get a better price. What sort of redress would I have though if he failed to pay his share?

My fiancé wanted somewhere to do up his car, so I agreed to let him knock down part of my garden wall so that he could get the vehicle into my back yard. This was on condition that he rebuilt the wall after the project was completed, we’’ve now split up. Is there any way I can force him to rebuild the wall?

Last year I received a cold call from a company stating that they could reclaim about £1600 for me from mis-sold PPI. At the end of the call I realised I had given away too much information and contacted the bank to cancel my credit cards, However, a sum of £800 had gone from my account several days later. Do I have a claim against the bank?
