General Legal Advice Questions

My son bought a car privately in January. This week it was seized by a bailiff acting for a finance company. He said there were payments outstanding on the car from last September, but the money wasn’t owed by the person my son bought the car from, but the previous owner. I was wondering what the legal position is?

Last year I bought a minibus, which is costing us £13,000 on HP. I recently tried to part-exchange the vehicle, at which stage we discovered that it was in fact a converted van, and as such worth only about £2,000. Do we have any comeback from the firm that sold it to us, or from the bank which arranged the finance?

I took out a subscription for TV, broadband and line rental. Shortly afterwards I left my boyfriend and he said he would continue to pay the monthly fees. He didn’t, and now the TV company wants me to pay the arrears and an early termination fee. What can I do?

We took an electrical supplier to the small claims court. At a preliminary hearing, the judge asked us to obtain an expert witness report on our £4,900 claim. However in court the expert wasn’t allowed to present his report. Might this constitute grounds for the judgment to be set aside?

When we moved into our one-bedroomed bungalow it was in council tax Band B, but we complained and they decided we should pay Band A charges. However the water company won’t cut our water bills even though we’re paying less council tax. They told us to get a water meter if we don’t agree with our water rates.

Two months ago I drove into a council car park through the exit by mistake, and wrecked a tyre on the steel flaps designed to prevent people getting into the car park without paying. In my opinion the signposts into the car park were very badly illuminated, but the council has refused to pay the £85 it cost me for a new tyre.

Six months ago we flew with Air Canada. Although we arrived our luggage did not. We reported this and were given a claim number, but despite writing to both their UK and Quebec offices by recorded delivery we’ve had no response. Both suitcases eventually turned up but we were put to considerable inconvenience. Without a response from Air Canada we cannot even claim on our insurance.

Builders renovating a house next door to a friend of mine caused so much dust when shot-blasting and cutting blocks that it damaged my friend’s computer and hi-fi system and her car needed a re-spray. No precautions were ever taken to stop the dust flying, and the builders were just abusive when she complained: is she entitled to any compensation?

Since my builder won’t commit himself in writing to the date when the work will actually start I’ve refused to pay a deposit. Is there any law requiring a contractor to give a commitment about when the work will be carried out?
