Areas of Law / Employment

Since retiring at 65 I have worked for more than three years as a part-time cleaner. One morning I was told I was being suspended on full pay and that I had to leave the premises, and I was later told I was being dismissed. No reason was given for this. Do I have the right to know why?

Even though you are “retired” you still have the full protection of employment law. If you have worked for the same firm for more than two years you have the right not to be unfairly dismissed. Even though you have left the firm you can still raise a grievance under the firm’s grievance procedure and claim compensation for unfair dismissal if they are unable to show you were sacked for gross misconduct. You should probably see a solicitor.
