If the police want to bring charges against someone, they refer it to the Crown Prosecution Service. If a member of the public wanted to bring charges against the police, could they also go to the Crown Prosecution Service?
To make a complaint about an officer’s behaviour or actions you would write to the Chief Constable. This would be investigated by the Police Discipline and Complaints Section, and, if serious enough, could be passed to the Police Complaints Authority. Only if it is felt that a criminal offence has been committed by an officer will the Crown Prosecution Service consider criminal proceedings. You could possibly bring a private prosecution. Alternatively if you feel that you were wrongly arrested or unlawfully imprisoned or suffered personal injury you may be able to bring a civil action for compensation.
