Areas of Law / Employment

I’ve worked as a part-time cleaner in a bank for ten years, although the contractors employing me have changed several times. When a new firm took over last year they put my wages up to £8.00 an hour, but they’ve now cut my hours so my pay has in effect been cut by a third. I thought I was entitled to the same terms and conditions as before?

If the firm you were working for has been taken over, your working conditions may have been protected by the Transfer of Undertakings regulations. This means that you are taken on with continuity of service and all the same terms and conditions from your previous employment. I suggest you put this to your employers in writing and stick to your normal hours until the matter has been resolved.
