Areas of Law / Employment

We started working for a firm before Christmas. Now the boss has told us that, although we are obliged to take Good Friday and Easter Monday off, he won’t pay us for them. We were under the impression that they are statutory bank holidays.

Nearly all workers are entitled to 28 days’ paid holiday a year (assuming they work a five day week). But there’s no legal right to paid leave for bank holidays. It’s likely that the Easter holidays will come out of your annual holiday “allowance” and you will be paid holiday pay for them. However some employers operate an accrual system to calculate how much leave you’ve “earned” in the first year of employment. If you have already taken some holiday you may not qualify for more at Easter. Your employment contract should deal with things like holidays.
