I am being prosecuted following an accident in a supermarket car park, even though the accident happened on private land but when a car reversed into mine recently on a supermarket car park locally I was told it wasn’t a police matter.
Not all car accidents have to involve the police, of course. If no-one was injured and the other driver gave you his or her details there was no reason to call the police. These days large supermarket car parks with more than one point of access may be classed as part of the public highway under the Road Traffic Act. This means, for example, that you could be prosecuted for failing to observe a road sign in the car park of your local store.
