Areas of Law / Divorce and Family

When you get divorced are you automatically disassociated from your husband financially? I’m confused about this, because my ex-husband has found out all about my financial comings and goings through several accounts where we have money.

Receiving your decree absolute is only a small part of splitting from your partner. Divorce automatically cancels any gift to your spouse in your will – but nothing else. You will have to close down (and divide up any cash in) joint accounts and any plastic you share, and sort out your property, including your house, car and the like. It’s worth obtaining a final order stating that your ex-husband has no further claim on you in case you win the lottery or come into money. If you still share joint accounts you are both entitled to see any transactions that have taken place.
