Areas of Law / Employment

Can our employer take away our annual bonus? My manager says that all they need to do to change our contracts of employment is give people 90 days’ notice.

Employment contracts are not set in stone. If an employer wishes to alter the terms of a contract then he or she must give adequate notice of the change. If the employee objects then he or she should do so in writing, and it could be that an employment tribunal would ultimately decide whether the change was reasonable. In the case of an annual bonus, if it was a regular and established payment, you could ask a tribunal to rule that the change constituted an illegal deduction from wages or a breach of contract.
