I’m a delivery driver, and after one stop I was accused by the manager of the premises of stealing a cleaner’s purse. I suggested the police were called, but they told me it wasn’t company policy. Mud sticks in my line of business and I wondered whether I should see a solicitor about suing the manager for defamation?
If the manager actually accused you of the theft there’s little doubt that what he said was defamatory. However I think you’d have a problem getting anyone to take your case on because such actions are always expensive. If you were to be sacked as a result of the accusation you would be better off taking your case to an employment tribunal. Since the police weren’t called they would be foolish to take the matter further.
