I worked for six years as a cashier at a garage, putting in sixteen hours a week. I had no written contract of employment. The garage was sold at the end of December, when I received a written notice terminating my “contract”. Am I entitled to a redundancy payment?

If the principal reason for your dismissal was the sale of the business the chances are that you will be able to claim compensation for unfair dismissal and/or a redundancy payment. If the business was sold on as a going concern the buyer may also have a duty to employ you. If successful you would receive a statutory redundancy payment plus (depending on the “fairness” of any dismissal) an award to compensate you for losses resulting from it. You must submit your claim to an employment tribunal within three months of finishing work, so act quickly.
