Areas of Law / Insurance law

When someone ran into the back of me at some traffic lights my insurers told me I was liable for the first £250 of the cost of the repairs. I always believed the excess applied if I caused the accident. Can this be right?

If you look at your insurance policy you will probably find that you are responsible for the first £250 of any claim, whether or not you were the innocent party. You could perhaps have avoided paying the excess if you had asked your insurers to take no action, but you may not have got back on the road as quickly. The other driver’s insurers may reimburse you, failing which you could sue the driver in the small claims court.
