Areas of Law / Property

I was walking my dog through some woodland when it became caught up in some rusty barbed wire that was hanging loose. I’d like to get this barbed wire cleared up but I’m having difficulty identifying who owns the land.

It’s often not the easiest of tasks to discover who owns a particular piece of land. Your best bet is usually to make local inquiries: ask at the nearest house. Alternatively try the council’s planning or council tax departments. There’s also the Land Registry: anyone can inspect the registers (on payment of a fee) these days, but if it hasn’’t changed hands recently it may not be listed. You will also need to identify the land by means of a plan.
