Areas of Law / Property

I sold my late father’s house to a friend of my son’s in 1997. We agreed that he would pay me £34,000 in instalments over six years, with an initial deposit of £7,000 paid at the solicitors, but he never paid the last £12,000. He claims we are all square and won’’t reply to my letters.

I have checked this address at the Land Registry and it appears to be unregistered. If you sold it through a solicitor in 1997 the Land Registry should have a record of this transaction. I cannot imagine a solicitor allowing you to hand over your house without a formal schedule of repayments, so I wonder whether you are in fact still the owner of the property? You need to see a solicitor about this urgently.
