I had a reconditioned automatic gearbox installed by a garage six months ago. The gearbox came with a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty. The firm has already repaired it several times. At what stage can I insist on a new gearbox?
You’re probably too late to reject the gearbox now as long as it’s generally serviceable. However the warranty is in addition to your statutory rights, so the garage will not simply be able to wash its hands of you after 12 months. If you need to take legal action later you could also ask for compensation for loss of use of your vehicle. You could certainly suggest that it may be cheaper for the garage to replace the gearbox now rather than continue to repair the old one.
