Areas of Law / Employment

I was one of five people taken on to work two days a week driving for a large firm. One of us soon started to work for the firm full-time, and now has a permanent position with all benefits. We all want permanent jobs, but the company won’t discuss the possibility. Where do we stand in relation to employment legislation?

The longer you work there, the more permanency you acquire. You start accruing holiday entitlement from day one, and after a month you become entitled to a week’s notice if you are sacked. After two months (even working just two days a week) you are entitled to the written particulars of your employment. After two years you come within the unfair dismissal legislation, and so on. So the distinction between permanent and temporary staff isn’t as clear-cut as you might think.
