Areas of Law / Divorce and Family

I asked my solicitor to start divorce proceedings nearly 14 months ago when my husband left me. My husband agreed to everything and I had hoped to be divorced by Christmas, but I can’t get a satisfactory reply from my solicitor. How long should it take?

In theory it should be possible in some circumstances to divorce in four-and-a-half months. In practice there are many possible reasons for delay, especially if one of the parties (including your husband’s solicitor) is not quick at turning paperwork around. However the fact that you cannot get an answer from your solicitor is cause enough for complaint. Under Law Society rules someone in the firm should be responsible for dealing with complaints; find out who this is and write in demanding action.
