Areas of Law / General Legal Advice

I asked a local builder for an estimate for an extension on my house. He in turn contacted somebody else, who came to the house and asked what I wanted. Next thing he presented me with plans (which I hadn’t asked for) and a bill for £350. I paid him £80 since I decided to move instead. He is now threatening legal action: do I have to pay him?

Since many builders give estimates free of charge I think you were probably entitled to expect the service to be free unless you were informed otherwise. It’s not as though the “somebody else” didn’t have the opportunity to discuss payment on his visit. Tell him that you intend to defend any legal action on this basis and that your £80 was a goodwill payment only.
