Areas of Law / Divorce and Family

After my divorce in 1991 my new partner and I bought a home together. Then I bought another property in my name which I renovated and let out. My partner, who is 13 years younger than me, has now left after 24 years. What will she be entitled to?

If you weren’t married your partner will only be entitled to a share in your jointly-owned property. This is likely to be 50/50 unless you divided the shares differently on the title deeds when you became joint owners. You need to have the property valued independently so that you can buy out your partner’s share if she is willing. Because you weren’t married she will have no claim on the rental property, or to any maintenance from you.
