My daughter went to the doctor about an eye problem and two months later took out health insurance. Six months after that she was diagnosed as suffering from multiple sclerosis. The insurance company now says her policy is void, on the basis that her visit to the doctor was in connection with the MS.
Anyone filling out a proposal form to take out insurance must disclose anything that might affect the insurer’s willingness to sell cover. The proposer must also volunteer information that might affect the insurer’s response but if your daughter answered the questionnaire truthfully and in good faith, she may be able to argue that the insurance company’s decision is unreasonable. Depending on which firm you’re dealing with you can either ask an insurance ombudsman to intervene or use an arbitration service. Show the documents to a solicitor first.
