Areas of Law / Property

My daughter and her husband came to live with us 12 years ago. My son-in-law pays us £50 a week, which our accountant calls rent, although we don’t have a rent book. What rights do they have over our property? I read somewhere that if they don’t have a rent book they might be entitled to a share of the proceeds if we sold the house.

Just conceivably they could argue that they’ve been contributing to the mortgage and therefore would be entitled to something if you sold the house. However I feel they would have to have contributed on a grander scale, for example by paying for an extension to be built, for a court to listen to such an argument with any sympathy. To be on the safe side though you should start using a rent book.
