General Legal Advice Questions

My husband and I splashed out on an £8,000 holiday to the Maldives to celebrate his 50th birthday. Our choice of villa turned out to be full, and we had to pay a further £1500 for what we were told were wonderful views but turned out to be a bit of greenery and the swimming pool. After being fobbed off by the tour operator and the travel agent we have now written to ABTA.

There have been notices up in our firm’s car park for some time saying that vehicles are parked at the owners’ risk. Now everyone is being asked to sign a form accepting that the firm has no responsibility for the cars parked there, which obviously takes things a stage further.

I live on a cul-de-sac where one particular boy uses the road and everyone’s garden to play football on, breaking plants and scratching cars. Do I just have to sit by and watch my car and garden being damaged?

We have lived on a council estate for 40 years and bought our house ten years ago. Since a new neighbour moved in a large number of people have begun using the passageway we share with next door as a short cut into the next road, is there any way to stop this?

We left our car in a friend’s garage and were paying them a five pounds a week for a while. I then became unemployed and we didn’’t pay anything for twelve months, during which time they sold the vehicle without telling us, even though they had our address and telephone number. Can we claim from them the value of the car?

I gave £5,000 to a friend. I am elderly and am now short of ready money, but the friend says I cannot have it back. Can you suggest what I might do?

At the shop where I work one of the assistants lets her young teenage daughter serve customers during the school holidays. I don’t think this is right, in case there’s a discrepancy in the till. At what age can a child legally handle money in a shop?

Would we be within our rights to put up a sign in our front garden advising people not to use the firm that botched our driveway? What guarantee do we have that we would get our money back if we were successful in bringing a case against them in court?

My car hit a bridge which was being maintained by contractors employed by the council. There were no signs to warn of the danger. The council said I should get in touch with the contractors: they in turn said it was the council’s responsibility. The contractors were said to be talking to their insurers, but three months later I still haven’’t had a response.
