Divorce and Family Questions

My husband wants a divorce but I don’t. If he decides to go ahead will I be able to stay in the matrimonial home until the divorce is final? It’s in his name only. Could I claim half the value of the property? We have been married for nine years.

My husband and I were partners in a business that failed. When we divorced there was an outstanding income tax bill, and we were told we’d each have to pay an equal amount. I’ve been left some money in a will; does this mean I will have to meet the debt in full, or just pay my half?

I recently separated from my wife. We have no children, but I’m very attached to our two dogs. Because of my work I couldn’t provide a home for them, but I would like to see them and have them stop over from time to time after the divorce. Would a court allow this?

My partner will have been separated from his wife for five years in November. She has said all along that she won’t give him a divorce. Could she still contest it after November? Will he need to supply the original marriage certificate, which she won’t release to him?

My son and his wife were only married seven months when she moved out. He was left with debts of several thousand pounds, mainly for the purchase of her clothes. If he divorces her for unreasonable behaviour will she have any claim on his salary or his works pension?

My daughter has mental health problems which wrecked her marriage. Her husband was granted custody of their baby, but she is worried that the baby will be put up for adoption if he can’t cope. Am I right in thinking that children cannot be put up for adoption unless the natural mother signs adoption forms?

My daughter is about to file for divorce. She has been married for six years, and has no children. She is not sure how long the divorce will take: some people say two years, others five. Is there a legal time limit for a divorce?

My son’s wife left him for another man, taking the children with her. I’ve always got on with my daughter-in-law, but she now says that if I want to see my grandchildren it will have to be when they’re at my son’s house. Can she stop me going round to see them?

My son bought a flat in joint names with his wife 10 years ago. They divorced soon afterwards, but her name was never removed from the mortgage even though she wrote a letter to the bank to say she wanted nothing more to do with the flat. This letter has now been lost, and the building society says my son needs his ex-wife’s permission to sell, even though he’s been paying the mortgage all these years. He doesn’t even know where she is.
