Divorce and Family Questions

My husband ran off with another woman two years ago. My solicitors can’t find him to serve divorce papers on him, and they say I’ll have to wait another three years now for my divorce. Is there any way I can divorce him sooner?

A woman on a TV programme was complaining that she couldn’t afford to get divorced, at which point a lawyer in the audience said he could get her a divorce for £50. Is this possible? I’ve been separated from my wife for five years and was told a divorce would cost around £1,000.

In our divorce settlement my wife was ordered to pay me a sum of money if she either remarried, sold the house or cohabited. The order states that the amount is to increase by one per cent a year. If she were to reduce her equity in the house by taking out a second mortgage, how would that affect my chances of payment?

My brother’s wife left him, taking the children with her. He’d used £50,000 he received in compensation for an accident to pay off the mortgage. Will this be taken into account when their finances are dealt with? His solicitor seems to think it’s irrelevant.

When my wife and I split up we rented out our house, but the rent didn’t cover the mortgage. Over several years I made up the shortfall, amounting to £15,000, until the house was sold. Am I entitled to claim half of the £15,000 from her?

My husband totally ignored the divorce papers that were sent to him by post. I had to apply for them to be served by bailiff, but my solicitor says there was no answer when they went to the house, although the TV was on and there was a car in the drive. What will happen if he doesn’t sign the papers?

When my teenage son was born I registered him with his father’s surname. But the father disappeared, and when my son started school he used my surname and doesn’t know any different. He now needs his birth certificate to enter the local football league. Could I get a new one showing his surname to be the same as my own?

My ex-husband and I divorced 20 years ago. He was ordered to pay me £28 a month, which I believe is forwarded to the DWP. People tell me they’ve never heard of someone having to pay his ex-wife for the rest of her life or until she remarried. But my ex-husband is reluctant to go back to court in case his payments are increased. What’s his legal position?

Do great-grandparents and grandparents have legal access to their great-grandchildren and grandchildren?
