Areas of Law / Consumer Law

We are all consumers, whether it be doing the weekly shop, buying that dream holiday or paying the household bills.

If you’ve paid for goods and services that aren’t up to scratch, as a consumer you’re fully entitled to challenge this in order to put things right.

Your rights

Legally, when you buy or pay for practically any product or service, you have “entered a contract”. Whilst this might sound complicated – its not! There are all kinds of laws to protect you if something goes wrong with your purchase. These are known as your consumer rights.

Our free legal advice covers a range of common problems and what you can do to challenge or get your money back if something isn’t up to scratch, including;

  • Contracts with utilities and household bills
  • Faulty goods
  • Goods not being “as described”
  • Repairs and home improvements
  • Returning goods
  • Supply of services
  • Warranties

Consumer Law Questions

A friend restored a piano for a customer but accidentally damaged it while delivering it. The customer refused to let him repair the damage and took him to court, where it was agreed that he’d pay £3,000 in monthly instalments of £50. However the customer has continued pursuing him, writing to his fiancée and his bank. Does my friend have to put up with this harassment?

I bought an expensive TV and sound package from a big store on finance over 36 months. They both came with a 12-month guarantee, but after 14 months the TV has packed up completely. I’ve been told it could cost as much as £200 to repair the set, but the store says it’s not their responsibility.

I had a reconditioned automatic gearbox installed by a garage six months ago. The gearbox came with a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty. The firm has already repaired it several times. At what stage can I insist on a new gearbox?

Is it legal for the firm that fitted my double glazing to ask me for a bond of £55 before they will come out to see whether my problem comes under the terms of their ten-year guarantee? Although the firm promises to return my cheque uncashed, it would appear that it’s entirely up to them whether or not I get the money back.

I booked a holiday but had to cancel it, having paid a £140 deposit by credit card. The firm said they didn’t need it in writing but advised me I would lose the deposit. Then a month after the date of the holiday the £440 balance appeared on my credit card statement. Are they allowed to do this?

I was quoted £195 including VAT for a full service on my car. I was therefore stunned to receive a bill for £320. The garage pointed out all the extra jobs they ha’d done, including changing the windscreen wipers. We paid them the £195 quoted, but we’ have now received a bill for the extra £125. Should we pay it?

My granddaughter has booked a holiday abroad, but now her husband has left her and the children out of the blue. She has asked the travel firm if she can cancel the holiday but they’ve refused to allow her to do this.

We have a service contract with the firm that sold us our TV set. We’ have paid into the scheme regularly for three years but when the set broke down it was five days before they came out to repair it. Are we entitled to compensation?

I have a problem with a washing machine. I paid for a three-year warranty but now, after two years, they have refused to repair it any more. What happens now?
