Before we met my partners own house was repossessed by the bank. She had so many debts that the sale price failed to cover them. Since that date, about four years ago, the bank has not been in touch. Is there a time limit after which the bank cannot pursue her for the amount she owes them?
If the bank was simply granted a possession order to take back the house it will not be able to pursue the debt after six years under normal circumstances. However the bank may also have been granted a court judgment for the money outstanding; if the judgment is connected to an order for land the limitation period may be 12 years. Your partner should check the details of the judgments listed against her and take further advice.
