Questions

I put in an offer to buy a house and was told by the vendor that I would be given first refusal. Although I suggested she should take advice, she later confirmed our agreement and the price, so I forwarded the agreed deposit and signed the contract document. She later reneged on the agreement and sold the house to someone else. Do I have a case against the vendor for compensation?

I had a cast-iron bath re-enamelled. The firm was offering a £25 discount, bringing the cost to £145 but when I got the bill they’d made it out for £170 plus VAT and then deducted the £25 discount from the total a difference of £5.00. Surely the VAT should have been on the discounted price?

I bought a DIY will at a stationers, filled it in and signed it and had it witnessed by two reliable persons. Will this be valid? Does it have to be opened by someone special after you die? I keep it at home but my family knows about it.

We have a service contract with the firm that sold us our TV set. We’ have paid into the scheme regularly for three years but when the set broke down it was five days before they came out to repair it. Are we entitled to compensation?

It’s common practice these days for insurers to include on renewals an additional premium of around £15 for legal expenses cover. I currently have legal expenses cover on both my car and home contents policies: do I really need two lots of legal expenses cover?

I bought some land 40 years ago which had a disused public footpath running across it. I built a bungalow on the land, but a few years ago the council told me I had no right to block the footpath, even though it runs through my garden. They now want £450 to divert a disused footpath.

I am single and went out with a widower for seven years until he died recently while we were on holiday abroad. I had several hundred pounds-worth of clothes and the like at his home, but his daughter says she wants nothing to do with me. Is there any way I can make her return my property?

What age does someone have to be before they can change their name by deed poll? The parents of the girl in question have divorced and her mother is getting married again, and she would like to change her daughters name to that of her new stepfather.

We have applied to buy a field at the back of our house from the council, however a condition of the sale is that we would be responsible for a culverted stream that runs the length of the land. The pipe already leaks, and if we had to replace it, it could cost us thousands. What will be the extent of our responsibility if we buy the land?
