Questions

When our son got married three-and-a-half years ago, his in-laws gave them £40,000 as a present to use as a deposit on a home. Our daughter-in-law now says marriage is not for her, the house is to be put on the market and her parents want their money back. Will they get it?

When our boiler stopped working the plumbers discovered that my daughter had accidentally shut off the gas by hanging her coat on the lever. However they’’ve still sent us a bill for £75 even though they discovered the problem within a matter of seconds. Do we have to pay it?

A firm of developers has started building houses about five feet from our boundary wall. According to the plans the closest house will have windows looking into three of our bedrooms and will destroy the privacy of our garden. Is there anything we can do?

My son is living in a house which he owns and his girlfriend is paying him rent. He also has some capital in shares. I have been told that, if they were to split up after living together for two years she would have a claim on his money. Is this correct?

We own a property on a mobile home park. We have been refused permission to replace our dog, which under park rules is “at the absolute discretion of the park owner”, but he bought this site when it already had dogs in residence. I presume he could seek eviction if we broke the rules, but since we own the property how would this work?

My neighbour and I have both been considering buying replacement double-glazed windows and he has suggested that we contract for the two houses in order to get a better price. What sort of redress would I have though if he failed to pay his share?

I live in a rented flat over a shop, which both have the same landlord. The tenants in the shop have now placed advertising boards directly alongside my lounge window. I have objected to this: can I force the shopkeeper to take down the boards? What would happen if I took them down myself?

One month before going into liquidation a director of a limited company formed another limited company and is now working there. Is that legal?

I separated from my husband a year ago but we are not divorced. We have joint debts of £40,000 and in addition he owes an enormous amount of money for which I have no responsibility. My husband intends to declare himself bankrupt, but I would prefer to avoid this myself if possible. If he goes it alone would I then be responsible for the full £40,000 we jointly owe?
