At the shop where I work one of the assistants lets her young teenage daughter serve customers during the school holidays. I don’t think this is right, in case there’s a discrepancy in the till. At what age can a child legally handle money in a shop?
The law bars most employment for children under 13 and there are strict restrictions for those aged between 13-16. It exists to prevent interference with their education and protect them from exploitation. There are no specific safeguards to protect adults from children who are working and who may not be able to add up! If your employer requires assistants to reimburse till shortfalls you should raise this with your manager but most people think it’s a good idea to give teenagers work experience as early as possible.
